How can a statue come to life?

1504030001I don’t know about you, but I’m going to have nightmares about this How. If you’re braver than me, read on for more about Gareth’s weird talking mannequin.

1504030002Now, this doesn’t quite have the impact unless it’s moving. But it’s still quite spooky.

1504030003Gareth has a recording of his face, that’s being projected with a video projector.

1504030004If it was being projected onto a flat screen, it would look like this.

1504030005But it’s not. It’s being projected onto a mannequin, like this.

1504030006It’s actually a very accurate plaster cast of Gareth’s face – so the projected Gareth looks spookily like… well, Gareth. The head is mounted on a tailor’s dummy to give the false Gareth a body.

1504030007As the recorded video of Gareth looks around and talks, the mannequin looks amazingly lifelike. This technique is used at exhibitions and theme parks. When it’s combined with animatronics to make the dummy’s arms move, the effect is even more realistic.

1504030008But you can also experiment a little. Here’s a recording of Fred’s face, projected onto Gareth’s head. Weird.

1504030009Stranger still: here’s Gail’s face, projected onto Gareth’s head. Click the picture to see it larger (that goes for all these pictures, by the way).

1504030010Eu eu eu! That’s just too weird.
